Children's Dentistry

Building healthy smiles
from the very start.

At Monroe Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we believe every child deserves a positive, anxiety-free introduction to dental care. Our approach to pediatric dentistry is rooted in patience, gentleness, and genuine warmth β€” creating experiences that children actually look forward to.

Early dental care is far more than cavity prevention. It establishes the habits, confidence, and oral health foundation that will serve your child for life. The American Dental Association recommends a child's first dental visit by age one β€” and we welcome babies, toddlers, school-age children, and teenagers with equal enthusiasm.

Dr. Alex brings particular expertise in working with younger patients β€” combining his University at Buffalo D.D.S. training with an approachable, reassuring chairside manner that puts even the most anxious children completely at ease.

Warm Welcome

Our team greets every child by name and takes time to introduce themselves β€” building trust before anything clinical begins. We never rush a child into the chair.

II
Gentle Examination

We examine teeth, gums, bite, and jaw development with a calm, explanatory approach β€” narrating every step so your child knows exactly what is happening and why.

III
Professional Cleaning

A gentle cleaning removes plaque and calculus, followed by a fun flavored polish. We make this a positive experience β€” never a source of anxiety.

IV
Parent Education & Planning

We take time with parents to discuss findings, home care techniques, dietary guidance, and development milestones β€” so you feel fully informed and supported.

FAQ

Pediatric questions,
answered.

When should my child first see a dentist?

The American Dental Association recommends a child's first dental visit within six months of their first tooth appearing, or by their first birthday β€” whichever comes first. Early visits establish healthy habits and allow us to monitor development from the very beginning.

How do I prepare my child for their first visit?

Keep it positive and matter-of-fact. Avoid phrases like "it won't hurt" β€” which can introduce the concept of pain. Read age-appropriate books about dentist visits, play pretend dentist at home, and let them know the dentist is a friendly helper for their teeth.

Are dental X-rays safe for children?

Yes. Our digital X-ray system uses up to 90% less radiation than traditional film β€” and we take X-rays only when clinically necessary. Lead aprons and thyroid collars are used for additional protection. The diagnostic benefit far outweighs the minimal risk.

Does my child need dental sealants?

Sealants are highly effective at preventing cavities in the deep grooves of back teeth β€” where most childhood cavities occur. We evaluate each child individually and recommend sealants when the anatomy and cavity risk warrant them.

My child is anxious about the dentist. Can you help?

Absolutely β€” dental anxiety in children is very common, and our entire team is trained to manage it with patience and skill. We offer a tell-show-do approach, frequent reassurance, and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for children who need additional support. Sedation is also available for complex cases.

Do you see teenagers as well as young children?

Yes β€” we see patients of all ages from toddlers through adulthood. Teenagers have unique dental needs including orthodontic monitoring, wisdom tooth evaluation, sports mouthguards, and sometimes whitening. We address all of these within our family practice.
