Two Branches, One Healthy Smile

At Monroe Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we practice both — and the lines between them often overlap in ways patients don't expect. Understanding the distinction helps you have clearer conversations about your care and know what to expect from each type of visit.

General Dentistry: Health First

General dentistry focuses on the health and function of your teeth and gums. It's preventive and restorative — the goal is to keep your mouth disease-free, pain-free, and fully functional.

Where They Overlap

Many treatments serve both purposes. A crown, for example, restores function to a damaged tooth and looks completely natural. Dental implants replace missing teeth to restore your bite and improve your appearance. Invisalign straightens your teeth for aesthetic reasons, but a better-aligned bite also protects against wear and jaw problems.

At Monroe Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we don't artificially separate these two areas. When Dr. Pete or Dr. Alex creates your treatment plan, they're thinking about both your oral health and how your smile looks and feels — because the two are inseparable.

Our approach: We always address health concerns first. Cosmetic work on top of untreated decay or gum disease doesn't last — and can make underlying problems worse. A healthy foundation is the prerequisite for a beautiful result.

Does Insurance Cover It?

In general, dental insurance covers preventive and restorative general dentistry — exams, cleanings, fillings, crowns for broken teeth, and sometimes root canals. Cosmetic procedures are typically not covered because they're considered elective.

There are gray areas: Invisalign may be partially covered if you have orthodontic benefits. Implants may be partly covered if they're replacing a tooth lost to disease. Our team will review your benefits carefully before any treatment and give you a clear, honest estimate.

If you don't have insurance, our Monroe Wellness Plan covers preventive care at a very affordable flat rate — and includes discounts on all other treatment.

Which Do I Need?

The answer almost always starts with a comprehensive exam. Once we know the state of your oral health, we can discuss what's needed medically and what you might want cosmetically — with no pressure either way. Book your exam by calling (770) 266-7188.
